Recognition award for Kati Kallio from The Dance and Circus Union in Finland

photo: Miika Strom Photography

On 27th March 2024 I received a recognition award from my union and colleagues in Finland.
I’m, so taken that my work has resonated and that it is seen meaningful and important.
Thank you so so much.

Huge applauses and congratulations to all awarded beautiful artist, especially Pirjo Viitanen for her Lifetime Achievement Award.

This is rough translation of the statement:

” Kati Kallio has significantly promoted the development and recognition of dance film in Finland. She has worked both in organisations and as a freelance artist, promoting the community of the Finnish dance film industry and the international distribution of films.  In his work, Kallio has also developed a feminist and collaborative way of making dance films, which involves and highlights those in a vulnerable position in society. Kati Kallio's work as an artist, in dance structures and as an activist in the field shows remarkable pioneering, perseverance, solidarity and responsibility.”

Wow, I’m blushing <3

Happy International Down Syndrome Day

STOP STEREOTYPES!

Today we celebrate International Down Syndrome Day with the theme 'Stop stereotypes!'.

To celebrate the 213 day, Ihanat dance company and Kati Kallio presents the GEN Z trilogy films online.

Gen Z film trilogy spotlights three young talented dance artists Minttu Heinonen, Sofia Johansson and Vappu Virkkula. Each of these dancers takes on a leading role, showcasing their own unique speciality which brings their superpower on screen, and in life. Through this collaboration, the film trilogy not only celebrates the talent and creativity of these young artists but also aims to inspire and uplift audiences worldwide. The trilogy captures the power of inclusivity, showcasing the magic that unfolds when diverse perspectives converge to create something truly extraordinary.

"On International Down Syndrome Day, we show that diversity is richness and that everyone is equal. Seeing a person stereotypically causes unequal treatment and wrong assumptions. However, everyone is different in their own individual way. So it's time to stop stereotyping." - Downiaiset - Finnish Down Syndrome Association

Time Subjectives in Objective Time is The Film of The Week

Photo: Aleksey Patentniy

Proud to let you know that Time Subjectives in objective Time film is The Film of the Week at dancefilmmaking.com

With this announcement the film that has had a great festival circulation (About 60 festival hits and two awards) is now ONLINE.

Sometimes you're just in the right place at the right time and magic can happen. This was my experience of working with the dance group Zonk'a in Yekaterinburg, Russia in 2017. We originally planned to shoot some footage for the short documentary film that I was making about contemporary dancers in Yekaterinburg. After planning shootings with these amazing dancers, we realised that we actually had a film to make. A film about time, its layered nature and essence.

In the film, three dancers guide viewers through the old factory where the former and the current time have solidified. In this meditative journey the main character of the film is the factory as dancers are in supportive roles. During the filming the factory was under renovation to be the new venue of Biennale – another time layer to become.

The film ‘Time Subjectives in Objective Time’ is a part of Kallio's Searching for Flow film series. It was made in collaboration with the Russian dance group Zonk'a, as part of the 2017 Ural Industrial Contemporary Art Biennale commission.

Dancefilmmaking is a website that brings dance films to the wider audience. They showcase and promote new talent, and create a surge of inspiration and opportunity. The site is free of charge and has a wide range of dance films.

Gen Z - Dance Film Trilogy in Premiere

Collaboration with Ihanat Company & Kati Kallio

The Gen Z film trilogy spotlights three young talented dance artists with intellectual disabilities

The three short films directed by Kati Kallio will premiere at the Outsider Art festival on August 19, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Oodi library's Kino Regina in Helsinki. The stars and creators of the films are independent young dancers, Sofia Johansson, Vappu Virkkula and Minttu Heinonen. Each of these dancers takes on a leading role, showcasing their own unique speciality, such as Down Syndrome which brings their superpower on screen, and in life. The trilogy is a collaborative effort of Riina Hannuksela and Elisa Lejeune, facilitating artists of the Ihanat Company, and  dancer-filmmaker Kati Kallio. Together they were committed to involving Sofia, Vappu and Minttu in the creative process from script writing to inspiring performances on screen, with each dancer contributing in their unique ways.

Outsider Art Festival

FILMS

Sininen, 9’50, 2023, Fi

Sininen (The Blue) is a fairytale fantasy of a bird-like figure in the embrace of the forest. The central character of the film has evolved over the years as Vappu has searched for her power figure through dance and movement. The film depicts gentle strength and magical skills, independence and a self-directed ability to create life, meaning and encounters around her. Each of us has something unique to pass on. The script was written together with the performers and choreographed by Vappu Virkkula.

MustA, 6’00, 2023, Fi

The idea and movement material of MustA is inspired by show wrestling and especially by the strong female characters in it. Sofia, Elisa and Riina often work together as choreographers. For Sofia, it is important to be seen as a strong and triumphant character who is not discouraged by challenges or opponents. Despite this, there is always a touch of light-hearted humor in her artistry. The script is written as closely as possible to Sofia's ideas.

Pinkki, 7’30, 2023, Fi

Minttu's film Pinkki (Pink) focuses on her unique way of creating choreography through touch. In her dance, touch informs, guides and makes visible her way of being with others. Another theme that emerges in the film is reciprocity between dancers and its importance for an equal encounter. Everyone can take turns to direct and be directed when there is trust between people and the conditions are just right for such a dialogue.

Contrapeso online screening in CST Kino Tańca Online: Inicjacje, Poland

In this edition of Kino Tańca, entitled "Initiations", we look at the breakthrough moments of maturing and self-definition. The films included in this program explore the tension between the sense of personal autonomy and the need to belong to a community, however culturally defined. They pose questions about identity and traditions in a broader socio-cultural perspective. The artists also focused on the concepts of masculinity and femininity, which, on the one hand, describe the body in a symbolic dimension, but on the other hand, can be a source of traumatizing definitions and practices. This year's entire cycle of film presentations will revolve around the issues of individuality, freedom, identity and memory.
The programme is curated by Regina Lissowska.

How to watch the programme?
You will be able to watch the program for free - without the need to have a ticket and log in. All you need is internet access and a link to watch the videos.

THREE AWARDS FOR WALKS WITH ME

I’m so proud of my crew and the film itself.

The Walks With Me received three awards during December and January:

  • THE BEST DANCE FILM PRIZE in Breaking Walls Dance Film Festival, Egypt

  • K PRIZE from The Zinetika Dance Film Festival, Spain

  • HONORABLE MENTION in Multiplié /Minimalaen, Norway

The The jury’s statement from Multiplié /Minimalaen, Norway :
"Walks with Me" is a beautifully choreographed film that depicts a touching story about relationships over time through the use of dance as an evocative medium. The dancers’ movements are graceful and captivating. The film explores the themes of friendship, dance, and loneliness in a way that is relevant to our current society, particularly given the isolation and divide we have experienced in recent years. The overall message of the film - the importance of human connection and the ups and downs of relationships over time - is moving and inspiring. The use of dance as a medium for storytelling is particularly effective, and the dancers were a joy to watch. Overall, "Walks with Me" was a delightful and thought-provoking film that left us feeling moved and inspired.

I’m so thankful for this attention towards our film. It is a special ‘baby’ to me, done in collaboration with Kyllikki Piira and 20 performers between the ages of 9-90 years.

Thank you Elli Isokoski for the trust to direct the film, producers Outi Rousu and Elli Isokoski for your great support and help along the way.

Thanks for the amazing team <3

Welcome to the third meeting of Coffee and Moving Images. Meeting is free of charge and includes coffee service. Language: English

This time in the first part of the meeting we will give the stage to the wonderful Maia Elisabeth Sørensen, who is a pioneer in Danish dance film scene.

Maia brings to the meeting a question for discussion: how to use choreography as a tool to break masculine linear storytelling? By this she refers to the prevailing film narrative form: setup, conflict, release. At the bottom of the discussion, she presents a few examples of more feminine, circular shape short films.

BIO:
Maia Elisabeth Sørensen is a Danish dance artist and filmmaker who made her first dance film in 2007 when graduating from the Martha Graham School in New York. Maia is a filmmaker who also works as an educator, curator and coordinator of dance film activities for both professionals and audiences. A particular interest is in working with people who are not trained dancers. "... here the bodily expression is more authentic and vulnerable."

In the second part, the stage is free for two dance film makers, who each present their own production and discuss it together in a Q&A style.

SUBSCRIBE to me by email. 2.9. I will make a choice from this pair latest on 4.9.

Specs:

  • Send a link to the movie to be shown at the event

  • The maximum length of the film to be screened is 15 minutes.

  • Take time to watch your partner's movie beforehand and prepare some questions / comments

  • Let's discuss the films fresh at the meeting itself.

///

Do you make dance films / videos / screendance or physical cinema? Do you miss collegial discussion, encountering, and sharing? Do you have a theme in your mind that you need the support, attention, dialogue, or mentoring of your community?

Skr Uudenmaan rahaston kärkihankerahoitus Tanssiryhmä Ihanan ja Kati Kallion tanssielokuvahankkeelle.

Suomen Kulttuurirahaston Uudenmaan rahasto on myöntänyt kärkihankerahoituksen (20 000€) Kati Kallion ohjaamalle tanssielokuvahankkeille, joka toteutetaan yhteistyössä Riina Hannukselan ja Elisa Lejeunen luotsaaman Ihanat tanssiryhmän kanssa. GEN Z nimeä kantavassa hankkeessa valmistuu kolme lyhytelokuvaa, joiden pääroolissa esiintyvät tanssijat Sofia Johansson, Vappu Virkkula sekä Minttu Heinonen. Elokuvat ovat osa Kati Kallion Searching for Flow elokuvasarjaa.

Kärkihankerahoitus on samalla kunnianosoitus Riina Hannukselan kymmenen vuoden mittaisesta työstä erityistä tukea tarvitsevien nuorten tanssin parissa. Hannukselan ohjauksessa näistä nuorista tanssijoista on kasvanut vahvoja oman liikkeen tulkitsijoita, joiden parissa on antoisaa työskennellä.– Kati Kallio

Tanssielokuvien pohjalla on vuosina 2019-2021 työstetyt sooloteokset.

Elokuvatrilogian Z-sukupolvi (työnimi) tavoitteena on tuoda näkyväksi sitä moninaisuutta, jota yksi sukupolvi sulkee sisäänsä nostamalla esille sellaisia tanssijoita, joita harvemmin nähdään sukupolvensa edustajina.

Kiitos kaunis Suomen kulttuurirahaston Uudenmaan rahasto.

Walks with Me received The Runner Up Best Experimental Prize from WOFF Festival

So taken of this honour and thankful for the whole team of Walks with Me. The WOFFF21 experimental film judges were visual artist Trisha McCrae and filmmaker Charlotte Ginsborg.

I went to tears reading their statement <3
Thank you so so much.

Jury statements

This is a beautiful film celebrating stages of life and female friendship. The body becomes a conduit of emotion and social relationships played out through time. Dynamic and nuanced choreography tailored to a variety of ages enables the audience to reflect on how they experience their own body and the possibilities contained within it. The edit is extremely well paced and the cinematography of a very high standard. A joy to watch.

- Charlotte Ginsborg

A beautiful and sympathetic film using a playful narrative dance as a metaphor for life and the passage of time.

The opening scene of the wonderful 94-year-old actor planting a seedling is a hopeful metaphor for the future. The close up shot through the window reflects a life gone by. We watch her as she looks out the window of her life as it dances through time.

Excellent direct use of a performative camera showing movement and focus in salient spots. Good close attention to the hands showing the strength of friendships; clever over the shoulder shots allowing the viewer directly into the scene, to almost participate in the jubilant interaction of youth and the tender touches of love.

Unobtrusive use of colour codes to help the viewer navigate the different times.

Wonderful use of sound to echo the obstacles and energy of life.

Stunning professional and tender performances from all.

A gem.

- Trish McCare

Whose Daughter Are You? film – new production company

Once Upon A Time in The North is now Whose Daughter Are you? and we have a new production company on board. Mete Sasioglu from Sons of Lumiére will take our film in his gentle hands and we are happy to go forward the next phrase with the film.

We also want to thank mAPs project and wish all the best for film projects.
