MOVING NORTH TOUR
About
Moving North Tour brings world-class dance films to audiences across Finland in a unique event format. The program combines works first showcased at Dance House Helsinki in 2024 with locally produced films, and creates opportunities for meaningful encounters between audiences and filmmakers. The touring programme curated by Kati Kallio makes the art form more accessible while also mapping dance filmmakers across Finland. Each event is organised in close collaboration with local partners.
The tour takes its name from the Nordic dance film series MOVING NORTH (2003), a co-production between five Nordic production companies — one from each country. The series features ten short dance films, two from each Nordic country.
Welcome to discover the beauty of dance films.
MOVING NORTH at VAASA
29.4.2026 klo.18:00
RITZ, Kirkkopuistikko 22A,65100 Vaasa
In honor of International Dance Day, we dive into dance films that awaken us to reflect on various rituals, our customs, and the concept of death. Besides the screening Kallio brings a meeting point called Coffee & Moving Images to Vaasa on the same day.
The screening will be opened by the film 55 REVOLUTIONS, a personal work by Alexandra Marina from Pietarsaari about the ritualistic power of dance on the verge of grief. The Danish-Dutch work How To Be A Perfect Human ironically reminds us of our rituals during the pandemic. In the film GONE, a mysterious man entertains himself in a house filled with memories. Or was he there? Silent Fragments by Austrian Andrea Hackl, produced in Maalahti, is the artist’s personal study of the relationship between the psyche and the body. The work is inspired by rituals, the theme of catharsis, change, and empowerment. Cailleach by Ailish Maher from Vaasa, who has an Irish background, takes us into the moods of the earth’s many people and makes us think about inevitability and the transition from time to eternity. Hijaisuuteen painettu is a work by Vilma Tihilä and Sanni Kriikku about a problematic relationship between a mother and daughter. The atmospheric film, born from the ritual of human relationships, highlights intergenerational themes. In the film In the Same Boat by Ostrobothnian Mia Malvineimen and Meri Junkkone, a memorable boat trip experienced by a father and son turns into a dance session amidst daily rituals. Finally, the film Einmin by the Faroese duo RAMMATIK, set in the aftermath of the party, makes us remember the pulse and hustle and bustle after the party.
Total running time of the films approx. 70 min
After the screening, an audience discussion will be organized with the artists present.

MOVING NORTH PORVOO
4.10.2025 klo 16.00 – 00.00
Vanha 123, Kaivokatu 37 B, 06100 Porvoo
Finnish dance films are thriving. Regina Lissowska, curator of the Polish Short Waves film festival, has noted that every year Finland produces such strong submissions that they could form a dedicated program on their own. The Finnish dance film screening MOVING presents internationally acclaimed works, complemented by pieces from Porvoo-based artists and even a circus film.
The NORTH screening sets the works of true pioneers of Finnish dance film in dialogue with films from across the Nordic region. Two Finnish gems from the original 10 Moving North dance film project (2003) – Portrait by Saara Cantell and Paula Tuovinen, and Vertebra by Milla Moilanen and Alpo Aaltokoski – will be screened alongside TransVersum by Marikki Hakola and Ismo-Pekka Heikinheimo. The program also features films from the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Denmark.
In addition to the film screenings, a public artist meeting will offer fresh perspectives on how to watch dance films and on the history of the genre in Finland. The discussion, featuring Marikki Hakola, Milla Moilanen and the duo Broas & Nyberg, will explore dance films from the 1990s through the 2020s.
The evening culminates with Lemon Drop — an immersive encounter between movement and sound. Created by drummer-composer Joonas Leppänen and dancer-choreographer Karolina Ginman, the work dives into the subconscious and free association, where storms collide with moments of intense silence.
Venue: Vanha 123
Tickets: 8 € / screening or gig | 20 € / full day

Milla Moilanen and Marikki Hakola, pioneers of dance films from Porvoo, will join the discussion. We will hear what it was like to combine dance and film in the 1990s and early 2000s, and what artists think about the art form today.
MOVING NORTH TOUR at SEINÄJOKI 29.5.2025
Kalevan navetta, Nyykoolinkatu 25, 60100 Seinäjoki
It is a pleasure to present to the audience six wonderful dance films, including one circus film, which transport us to different worlds through movement, emotions, and visuals. The screening opens with dance film Excavation, which is a duet between dancer Ella Post and an excavator. The film explores the relationship between human and machine from a posthumanist perspective. The work explores the relationship between the human body and the machine, highlighting how both can simultaneously possess extreme strength and sensitivity. Conceptual film A Ritual of Care by Ailish Maher offers a perspective on presence and care through the lens of ritual making, where actions, intentions and space are made meaningful and relevant. The poetic music and dance film Hiljaisuuteen painettu (Carried with Silence) by Vilma Tihilä and Sanni Kriikku explores the relationship between mother and daughter, examining transgenerational trauma and the silent transmission of emotions printed beneath the surface from one generation to the next. Film Samassa veneessä (In the Same Boat) by Mia Malviniemi and Mervi Junkkonen, explores the limits of the elderly body and the boundlessness of the mind. The film tells the story of Rauno, who takes us on a boat trip, facing unexpected adversity. In the film FUR FUR, Kardo Shiwan takes viewers into the forest with his family and asks, can fur have a memory? The film's story intimately and sensitively explores the memories, melancholy and intergenerational grief of a bilingual family. Anna Maria Jóakimsdóttir Hutri's dance film Through The Supermarket in Five Easy Pieces tells the story of the everyday challenges a family of five faces during their weekly trip to the supermarket. The story is an allegory for the five classical elements of earth, air, fire, water and ether, how they strive in different directions, yet remain together as one. Antti Suniala’s Walls Beneath Our Feet is an internationally acclaimed circus film that combines music, street art, urban architecture and the manipulation of time with the acrobatic and skilful use of the circus body.
